Return of the King part 2
Revelation 19:17–18 (ESV) Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave, both small and great.”
I would imagine most of us have seen occasions where birds were circling in the sky nearby. When you saw this, you knew that something was about to die or had died. They are just waiting to feed upon the dead carcass.
As Jesus returns, birds are summoned. This will be a circling of birds, unlike anything man has seen. Probably thousands upon thousands of birds. They are summoned to feast upon the bodies of those who are about to die.
Revelation 19:19–21 (ESV) And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh.
I believe the armies of the antichrist have initially come to fight against the Jewish people. But then as Jesus appears, they turn to fight against Him. This is what is known as the battle of Armageddon. What I want you to notice is, this is not much of a fight. The antichrist and the false prophet are captured and thrown into the Lake of fire. These are the first of many who will join them.
Notice that the rest are slain by the sword that came from His mouth. All Jesus will do is speak a word and all those people will die. Consider what we are told in John 18:6
John 18:6 (NIV) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
How great will the slaughter be? Consider what we are told in Revelation 14
Revelation 14:17–20 (NLT) After that, another angel came from the Temple in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel, who had power to destroy with fire, came from the altar. He shouted to the angel with the sharp sickle, “Swing your sickle now to gather the clusters of grapes from the vines of the earth, for they are ripe for judgment.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and loaded the grapes into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20 The grapes were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress in a stream about 180 miles long and as high as a horse’s bridle.
In verse 21 of Revelation 19, it says “all the birds were gorged with their flesh.”
