Romans 13 – “How to be a good witness”
Yesterday after service, Tim & Tina Dixon shared about their mission trip to Thailand. Tim & Tina have been doing outreaches in the village where Tina was raised as well as in the surrounding area. This is something they try to do whenever they can go to Thailand. Because of Covid, this recent trip was the first time they were able to go in about 3 years. They have formed a ministry called “Voice for the Voiceless Thailand.
During this trip to Thailand, Tim had the opportunity to talk with a man who is a Buddhist (which the majority of the people are). The man conveyed to Tim that he was observing them. Tina’s brother, who is also a Buddhist and lives in Thailand, conveyed to Tim & Tina that he observed how loving Tim and his group were to one another and those they were reaching out to.
What the man who was observing Tim and his group wanted to learn, wasn’t so much what made Christianity different from Buddhism, but whether Tim and his group’s beliefs were genuine. In other words, do they really believe what they preach? What this man was observing is how these folks conducted themselves. He wanted to see if their conduct was consistent with their teaching. Why? What I learned recently from Tim & Tina is that there seems to be some hypocrisy among Buddhist people, especially devout Buddhists. Some of the Buddhist monks will dress in their Kasaya during the day and act one way, but then at night they will dress another way and act contrary to what Buddhists believe.
I shared 4 things yesterday from Romans 13 that if practiced, will help us be good witnesses to the world around us. First, showing respect to those in authority over us. Second, pay what you owe. Third, showing love to others. Fourthly, redeeming the time.
If our conduct is inconsistent with what we believe and teach, not only will people ignore what we have to say, but they will not want anything to do with us because of the hypocrisy. Show that your beliefs are genuine by practicing what you preach. As you do, it will cause people to take note of your lives and hopefully open doors for you to share Jesus with them. Go forth today and be among those who are turning the world upside down with your words and your deeds.
