Sunday Follow-up
1 Corinthians 1:10-31 “It’s the message, not the man”
If you are a follower of Jesus, I want you to think back to the moment you were born again. The day that your life was forever changed. You made a response to the gospel message. It was a message that may have been conveyed to you by a friend or family member, a pastor during a church service, or listening to someone speak of Jesus on the radio. What is important to remember is, it wasn’t the individual who shared Jesus with you that changed your life. It was the Spirit of God, pointing to the Son of God through the gospel presented to you that changed your life. Your life was changed because you responded by faith to the only one who could change your life – Jesus.
As you continue to follow Jesus, He will use various men and women of God to help you grow in your walk with Him. No doubt there will be those whom you will deem to be your favorite Bible teachers. It may be because of how they articulate the Word. It may be because they are more dynamic when they speak than others. But never forget, no matter how well they speak, if your life is being changed it is the Spirit of God working through the Word of God that is changing your life, not the individual sharing it.
As we go out into the world each day, we are called to share the gospel message with those around us. We are not called to promote a teacher or a church, we are called to promote Jesus Christ. Keep in mind that the world around you thinks the message you heard and responded to is foolish. They think you are foolish for believing it. So don’t be surprised if people criticize you or mock you or even attack you. Don’t be surprised if people come against you when you call what the world says is normal, sin.
Many believers struggle with sharing the gospel because they are afraid they might say the wrong thing and then people won’t believe. This can result in believers thinking it’s their fault if the person doesn’t believe. In those moments never forget – “it’s the message that changes lives, not the man or woman”. It’s not your job to save people, your job is simply to tell others about the One who can. What people do with that is between them and God.
As you go forth this week, walk in the Spirit and rely upon the power of the Holy Spirit to equip you to share the gospel with those around you. If you are blessed to lead someone to Jesus, then rejoice in Him for what He did through you. If you are walking in the Spirit and share Jesus with someone and they don’t respond, don’t blame yourself, because you couldn’t change that person’s life in the first place.
