1 Corinthians 3 – “Keys to Spiritual maturity”
Spiritual maturity is not something we obtain upon our spiritual birth, nor does it happen automatically. Spiritual maturity comes through spiritual growth and it is something that we have to be intentional about. There are things we can do to facilitate our spiritual growth thus allowing us to mature in our walk with Jesus.
But what is spiritual maturity? Stephen Rankin defined a spiritually mature Christian this way - “One whose whole character - dispositions, words, and actions - emulates the character of Jesus Christ himself.” In other words, when your life as a whole reflects the character of Jesus, you are maturing as a follower of Jesus.
Keep in mind though, we will never stop growing spiritually until the day we go to be with Jesus. This means you will never stop maturing. It is also true that we can hinder our spiritual maturity by stunting our spiritual growth.
How do we facilitate our growth? First, become a student of the word of God. Our spiritual growth is directly connected to our knowledge and understanding of the Bible. In addition, develop a strong prayer life, stay connected to the body of Christ, and serve others. Spiritual growth happens as we take in and give out.
Another key to spiritual maturity is the foundation we build on. Every believer is building their life upon something. Either we are building our life upon the Rock (Jesus) or we are building our life upon the sand (anything else other than Jesus). A solid and stable foundation is necessary for spiritual growth.
As you begin your week, do an honest assessment of where you are spiritually. Don’t assume that because you have been a Christian for a long while that it means you are maturing. Identify areas that you need to strengthen and then commit yourself to do so. Spiritual maturity is not only important to ourselves, but it is also important to the body of Christ.
