January 7th Follow-up
Colossians 3:18 – 4:18
Faithful servants
One day all followers of Jesus will appear before the Bema (reward) Seat of Christ. There we will learn of how we did in our service to Jesus. If you are like me, I long to hear those words – “well done good and faithful servant”. But what is a faithful servant? How can I know if I am being a faithful servant? As a side note, faithful does not mean perfect. However, we can still be faithful to Jesus even though we are flawed because of sin.
We began by looking at how faithful servants faithfully serve those whose authority they come under. Paul spoke of wives and husbands, children and parents, masters (employers), and slaves (employees). It is easy to be faithful to those whose authority we come under when they treat us as they should. Or to those who are under our authority when they do what they should do. But as we all know that does not always happen. We should never let others dictate by their actions our faithfulness to our roles. Because when we are faithful in whatever roles we may have, we are being faithful to Jesus.
Secondly, faithful servants are faithful to the spiritual disciplines of the Christian walk, especially that of prayer. Paul was not only faithful to pray for others, but he was also good about asking for prayer. I believe our prayer life is essential to us being faithful servants. A strong and consistent prayer life doesn’t just happen. It takes commitment and dedication to it. Make your prayer life one of your highest priorities.
Lastly, we considered how faithful servants serve even the lost. One very important way we can serve the lost is by being mindful of our conduct and our words. We want to try as best as we can to be Christ-like towards the unsaved. We don’t want to let the actions of the unsaved dictate whether our conduct or our words are in line with the character of Jesus. Have a blessed day.
