1 Corinthians 6:12-20 – “Choose wisely”
If you want to know what God has deemed to be sinful, read the Bible. Anything God has declared sinful, we are not free to do. Yet some in the church in Corinth believed it was lawful (or that they were free) to commit sexual immorality. I think we can all agree that when Paul said “All things are lawful” he did not mean that the Corinthians were free to sin whenever they wanted to.
How should we understand that phrase? Think of it this way. If want you are contemplating doing is not considered sinful, you are free to do it. But being free to do something doesn’t mean we should. Before choosing to do something, we need to think about how those choices may affect us spiritually. Some things we may choose to do will neither hurt us nor help us. But some things may have the potential to lead us down a path into sinful behavior. Part of choosing wisely is to choose not to do something that has the potential to shipwreck our faith. Another part of choosing wisely is choosing not to reason ourselves into sinful behavior as some of the believers in Corinth did.
One thing we have to remember about the believers in Corinth is that they came out of a culture where sexual immorality was not only a normal part of life but it was acceptable. Some parts of the church today have accepted the world’s view of sexuality and gender even though they are contrary to what God has declared in His word. We cannot allow the world to tell us what is and what isn’t acceptable
As you go forth into your week, stand firm upon the truth of God’s word. Let your choices be guided by the word of God. If you do, then you are choosing wisely.
