1 Corinthians 10 – “What we need to understand about temptation”
There are some portions of roads in Scottsdale Arizona, where there are road signs that say – “Do not enter when flooded”. These signs were put in place because people would try and cross those sections of roads when they were flooded. This resulted in their vehicles being stranded in the flood waters.
Even after the signs were put up, people would still attempt to cross. Why? Because they believed it would be different for them. At that moment when they come to that point in the road, they are faced with a temptation. The temptation is – “do I ignore the warning sign” or do I take a different way?
Followers of Jesus are not above being tempted nor are we immune to giving into temptation. It is not a question of whether you will face temptation, it is a question of what choice will you make when it comes your way. Temptations come in various forms. Some temptations are very obvious, while others are not so much.
Just because a driver might be able to cross the flooded road, doesn’t mean they should. You might not be as vulnerable to a particular temptation as others, but that doesn’t mean you should travel that road. When you believe that a particular temptation is not an issue for you, that is when you become vulnerable. You become vulnerable because you tend not to guard that area of your life.
Those who are addicted to something, didn’t start with the intention to become addicted. They became addicted because they took a road that they believed they could cross with no problems. Those who commit adultery don’t wake up one day and decide to commit adultery. They started down a road and ignored the warning signs and ended up in sin.
As you go forth into your week, beware of the temptations around you. Look for the warning signs. When you see temptation ahead, choose a different path. Don’t get caught in the trap of thinking – “it won’t happen to me”. Choose to glorify God with your life.
