1 Corinthians 12 – “Do you know why you are important to your church family?”
Human nature is such that we can fall into the trap of believing that certain spiritual gifts are more important or have greater value to our church family than other spiritual gifts. Why do we sometimes think that way?
Could it be because some spiritual gifts are more readily seen when they are used? Or because some of the gifts can reach more people at one time? When a pastor is using their gift of teaching, they are reaching those who listen to the teaching either in person or online. Whereas, the one who has the gift of helps, who uses their gift to provide a ride, seemingly is only reaching that one person.
We tend to think this way because we have a wrong understanding of the purpose and function of spiritual gifts. The ear was not designed to function like the eye, nevertheless, it is important. Our lungs, heart, etc… are not seen, but they are necessary for us to live.
God has given our church families those who are gifted to serve as pastors, but they are not more important or more valuable than those in our church families who have been gifted in other ways. Some people have spiritual gifts that are used in the background, unseen by many in the church family, yet they are just as important as those who have spiritual gifts that are seen by others.
May I encourage you today to not focus on the spiritual gifts that you don’t have, but rather focus on how you can use the ones you do have. Don’t measure your spiritual gifts to the gifts of others. Your gifts are just as important and needed as theirs because all spiritual gifts come from the Holy Spirit. Also, the use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is not limited to Sunday mornings or Wednesday nights. They are to be used whenever there are opportunities and as the Spirit leads.
If you don’t know what your spiritual gifts are, start praying that God will show you. Talk with those who know you that understand the gifts and ask them if they recognize any of the spiritual gifts in you. Some of you are likely using spiritual gifts you did not know you had. Go forth this week and glorify our Lord and Savior Jesus by using your gifts for His glory.
