2 Corinthians 5 – “Followers with a mission”
In Matthew 4:18-20 we are told this - 18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, ”Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Not only were they called to follow him, but they were also given a mission. It’s the same mission given to us when Jesus called us to follow him. If you have been a Christian for some time, you know that carrying out our mission is not always easy.
We carry out our mission in the grind of day-to-day life. We may find ourselves dealing with health issues, financial issues, or relationship issues. We deal with things that cause us to grow weary physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Things that may lead us to want to give up.
As followers of Jesus, we know people who need to be reconciled to God. It may be loved ones, family members, or friends. Yet, we live in a time when people don’t want to hear about Jesus, sin, and the need for salvation. People can be very mean and vocal about letting you know that. As a result, sometimes we may want to say – “what’s the point”. Let me share two things with you to help spur you on.
First, Paul tells us that these dying bodies will one day be exchanged for new ones that will never know pain, sorrow, or death again. He also tells us that one day we will stand at the Bema seat of Jesus. Here we will learn of our rewards that will be determined by our service to him here on earth. I have no doubt Paul longed for Jesus to say of him – “well done good and faithful servant”. It was knowing these two things that enable Paul to give his all for Jesus even if it meant giving his life.
We tend to assume we have tomorrow. But the truth is we don’t know that we do. May we go forth this week with a strong commitment to the mission given to us knowing what awaits us when these tents (our earthly bodies) are taken down.
