2 Corinthians 6:3-13 – “Faithful servants”
If you are a follower of Jesus, you are likely familiar with the parable of the talents where the master says to two of his servants – “well done good and faithful servant”. I don’t know what rewards await me, but my heart longs to hear Jesus say to me – “well done good and faithful servant”.
What does faithful mean and what does a faithful servant look like? Let me start with a definition of faithful. Faithful means steadfast in purpose or devotion. Or we might say it this way. Faithful is being steadfast and devoted to our purpose. What is our purpose? Serving God by ministering to the people God brings into our lives, both the saved and the unsaved.
Ministry isn’t something that happens solely within the 4 walls of our churches. It happens in our workplaces with our co-workers. It happens in our homes with our spouses, children, and siblings. It can happen at the bank, the grocery store, or the restaurant you are at. Ministry can be fun, but it can also be very hard. Sometimes the people God puts in your life to minister to will make your life hard. They will challenge your steadfastness and your devotion. You may feel like you can’t go on or you may feel like giving up.
What was it that allowed Paul to press on with his ministry even though it was extremely hard at times and nearly cost him his life? He did not rely on his strength, but the strength of the Holy Spirit.
What are some characteristics of a faithful servant?
1. Faithful servants look to avoid doing things that will hinder their ability to minister to others.
2. Faithful servants will stand firm, will not give up, and keep serving God no matter how
hard it may be to do so.
3. Faithful servants make it their aim to please God rather than man.
4. Faithful servants choose to die to self daily and accept the cost of serving Jesus
5. Faithful servants live each day with the right perspective
These are all things that every believer can do. As you go forth this week, know that faithful does not mean perfect. When you fall short, and you will. Get back up, acknowledge it, and give glory to God.
