2 Corinthians 12:11 – 13:14
“The heart of a disciple”
For those of us who have been saved, we often refer to ourselves as Christians, followers of Jesus, or believers. But one thing we can’t forget is that we are disciples of Jesus. Here is a definition of a disciple:
A disciple is one who follows Jesus, is being changed by Jesus, and is committed to the mission of Jesus. As a result, a disciple loves God and loves others.
In closing out Paul’s 2nd letter to the Corinthian church, we looked at several things that those who have the heart of a disciple will desire. They were as follows:
To walk in humility. To live in a way that others can see I follow Jesus. To live an others-oriented life. To show love towards others even if that love is not reciprocated. To show that we are trustworthy. To build others up, not tear them down. To put the things of the old life behind us. To continually examine our walk with Jesus.
As a disciple of my Lord and Savior, I desire to display the heart of a disciple in these ways. Why? because I want people to see what God can do in the life of those who put their faith in Jesus. I want the unsaved to see the truth of Jesus through my life. But if my actions don’t line up with my words, then why would anyone listen to what I have to say? I may not be perfect in these things, but I can be blameless. Blameless simply means that when I fall short and sin, I acknowledge that sin and repent of it.
One last thing to keep in mind. Don’t look at the things I mentioned as things you need to go out and start doing. These are the by-products of a healthy Christian life. If you are pressing into the Lord daily. If you are spending regular time in the Word of God and prayer. If you are letting the Holy Spirit work out through your life what He is working in you. Then those things will be present in your life in growing measure.
Go forth this week as a disciple of Jesus and display the heart of a disciple so that others may glorify Him.
